What is Reading comprehension?

Reading problems cannot be taken at face value. It is because people misconceive it and blandly state it as an inability to read. However, that is not the case. Reading comprehension is the person’s understanding of what a particular word means. It does not stop there. Only when the person can grasp the context and the voice behind the words, he is said to have good reading comprehension.

Not only does the brain process the text itself, it includes the context and the relationship of other words surrounding it. This way, the brain can render the big picture.

Strategies to improve reading comprehension

1 – Know your existing reading ability

Before you can improve, you must know where you stand currently. Take out any magazine, book, or newspaper and read an unfamiliar excerpt. Notice when your attention begins to drift and the understanding of the text wavers. For instance, if your concentration is intact for the first 15 minutes, then take a short break after the first session. Begin the next round and read until you hit the 15 minutes mark. Try to marginally increase the duration as the day progresses.

Sugsar uses effective concentration exercises for students that help them to focus on the material they are currently reading.

2 – Highlight text while reading

The best method to improve concentration is to highlight text while you read. It does two things. One, you increase the focus and eliminate distractions. Then, you will be exposed to a lot of unfamiliar words during this exercise. Understanding their meanings will enrich your vocabulary and as a result, your comprehension will also improve. This exercise forms part of the right brain training in our classes.

3 – Ask questions from the text

Create questions out of the material that you are currently reading. It helps you stay focused and enhances your ability to look at the subtext. Therefore, in this process, you will also be able to understand the entire context of the study material.

4 – Read for the fun of it!

Enhancing reading comprehension cannot be done overnight. It improves with practice. So, putting tireless effort can be demotivating if you take this as a serious business. Have fun with the reading exercise as this will motivate you further to improve your reading ability. The best way is to turn the reading exercise into an interactive game. Hence, you will trick your mind to be playful while enhancing your skill.

5 – Read aloud

Sometimes you might be exhausted or the word choice might be complex. It creates a block. Try reading aloud to bypass this block and improve the reading flow. You can also improve pronunciation through this exercise.

Mastering reading comprehension takes constant effort. Make use of the above tips to help boost the effectiveness of your learning.
