Literacy Difficulties in children
Children build literacy skills at different times. Sometimes children talk late, but they might have developed the language skills by the time they are 3-4 years old.
3- 4 years:
The child is said to have early literacy difficulties if he :
- has not started talking yet
- has difficulty learning and remembering new words
- forms incomplete sentences
- has difficulty recognizing alphabets
- finds difficulty in repeating nursery rhymes
- poor eye contact
- is not able to the action words from a picture book
Five years and over:
Your child might have literacy difficulties if he:
- has a problem in reading
- is not able to use a proper grammatical phrase
- writes with a lot of spelling mistakes
- is highly distracted
- has issues with board copying
{ Note: Such children are often found to be non-organized.}
Coping with children having literacy difficulties:
- If your child has literacy difficulties, work out a lot of strategies to impart language skills.
- Encourage the child by giving him the right kind of print materials that he’s more likely to be interested.
