Strategies To Strengthen Reading Comprehension In Dyslexic Kids

Reading becomes an uphill task for dyslexic kids. They may have seen a word couple of times but can forget all about it easily. It is very difficult to remember a word and the meaning behind it. Sugsar follows effective strategies to strengthen reading comprehension in dyslexic kids at our English coaching centre in Chennai. A major portion of their brain’s capacity is spent in understanding the word itself. Therefore, it impacts the overall reading and comprehension time.

Certain steps can build a solid foundation for the children, not just for the short-term but for future learning as well. Let us look at these methodologies to strengthen reading comprehension.

Three elements determine the success of a reading comprehension session:

  • Improving vocabulary
  • Widen the scope of understanding a text as a whole and not in isolation
  • Preparation of the teacher in designing a beneficial training session

All of the above will work cohesively to produce the best results.

1 – Improving vocabulary

The first step in enhancing the reading ability is to feed in a lot of new words. When the child is exposed to a wide range of text, holistic development in reading is achieved. When child concentration exercises and vocabulary-building activities go hand-in-hand, it will improve the retention capacity of the students.

A child should know to understand unfamiliar words and draw meaning from the texts that surround them. For instance, children will be able to comprehend the word dog if they are familiar with the word cat. This connection of similar words will go a long way in improving their reading ability.

Some of the elements that a teacher needs to keep in mind during this exercise are as follows:

  • Ensure that the students are repeatedly exposed to the words
  • Building a basic level vocabulary before proceeding with the text
  • Practicing vocabulary in both written and oral format

A teacher must not solely depend on one approach but combine concentration exercises for students and other forms of learning to make the session more interactive and engaging.

2 – Text comprehension

Getting to know each word and its meaning can take a lot of time to improve reading comprehension. The idea is to enable children to see the whole picture rather than a portion of it. Teachers encourage the kids to look at the text in relation to the whole sentence rather than as a stand-alone unit.

A study has found that comprehension works best when children actively participate in deciphering the meaning of the words and form mental images of their own. This creativity will foster better reading abilities. Therefore, comprehensive right brain training helps to increase this visualization process.

Here are some ways to improve text comprehension:

  • Representing the text visually for quick understanding
  • Fostering a discussion about the material
  • Analyzing the structure of the text/story
  • Summarise the material

3 – Preparation of the teacher

A teacher must also be equipped with the necessary knowledge to improve the thought-process of the children. They must use a multi-sensory learning approach to make reading easy and memorable.

At Sugsar, we provide effective dyslexia and ADHD Treatment in Chennai for children to improve their brainpower. Our strategies will focus on improving the overall ability of the child.
