How does memory work?

The brain’s ability to retrieve memory is still largely unknown. Scientists have been pondering over this for more than 2,000 years. Yet we know one thing for sure. The brain follows three steps to process memory.

Encoding

The brain collects the image, sounds, and other details in this step. It puts conscious effort to understand the new information. 

Storage

Once the brain perceives the input, it is stored in different brain regions. The neurons transfer this information to create a short and long-term memory. These neural connections and their strength are responsible for good memory.

Retrieval

This is the final step of the memory process. When the brain wants to retrieve information, it retraces the neural pathways created during its formation.

1 – Exercise for fast memory recall

Exercise enhanced memory recall capacity. Healthy older adults showed little to no decline in memory. To be precise, regular exercise improved spatial memory. But that’s not where it ends. Physical activity can amp up the cognitive abilities of the brain. Hence, if you want to be mentally sharp, why not take a walk?

2 –  Mnemonics

Mnemonics help you to remember phrases or a list. It is one of the concentration exercises for students during brain training. Apart from the standard mnemonics, there are others as well. For instance, music mnemonics creates natural structure and repetition. It is a more efficient way to remember than stuffing the entire text at once.

3 – Memory Palace

This concept goes back to ancient Rome. They created this “method of loci” to remember things. The memory palace is an exciting and effective way to enhance memory. A familiar object is linked to the thing a person is trying to remember. For instance, a person can recognise a phone number by visually connecting it to the number of books on each row of their bookshelf.

4 – Chunking

A large piece of information can be tricky. But breaking them into chunks make it easy to remember. For example, it is easy to recall 817-788-9021 than 8177889021. 

Research says that a person can hold up to 4 specific things in short term memory. We can hack the working memory by creating more chunks. 

5 – Sleep

Many studies establish a strong relationship between sleep and memory. It is because our memory is consolidated during sleep. Scientists also illustrated the importance of strategic naps by testing two groups. Each group were to remember a set of images and then come back 40 minutes later to list them. In this exercise, one group took a nap while the others stayed awake. 

The group that slept were able to retain 85% of the images as compared to the 60% of those who were awake.

6 – Meditation 

Researchers indicate that mindful meditation can improve memory recall in just six months. The brain is put to a quiet state during meditation. It is one of the elements of Sugsar’s right brain training
